At the beginning of each A Wondrous Place show the cast performed an ‘intro’ sequence that brought together all of the ideas driving the project and which aimed to express where we were coming from. We called this section of the show, ‘Imagine the North…’ and, because we wanted it to feel inclusive, we created it from Twitter and Facebook responses to the questions:

What experiences can you have in your city that you can’t have anywhere else?
What place names do you love?
What people should be on a Sgt Pepper album cover celebrating your city?
Your city is a person, what three words best describe their personality?
What cliches about the north of England annoy you the most?

Here’s the original music that played during ‘Imagine the North…’, created by Caro C and played by musicians from across the north.

And here’s what the cast expressed on the show’s opening night…

Josh (Sheffield):
Imagine the North…
Not the grim up North, the gritty up North,
The cloth cap and cobblestone, or ugly grey concrete North…
Kathryn (Newcastle):
Not the chip on the shoulder, or the ‘going to the chippy’ North,
The downtrodden, depressed and deprived up North…
Adam (Liverpool):
Imagine the true North.
The now North.
The fantastical North.
The North that’s a brilliant idea.
Sally (Manchester):
A technicolour North sparkling under incredible skies
…with widescreen landscapes that make you want to shout out, “Cheers God,
nice one pal!”
Kathryn:
…with impossible buildings built by mad fools who dreamt they could change
the world…
…A land of hard working grafters…
Adam: …mavericks and weirdos…
Josh: …piss taking optimists…
Sally: …bold pioneers…
Josh: …inventing the future…like Phil Oakey…
Sally: …with fire in the belly… like Pat Pheonix…
Adam: …cosmic…like Brian Cox…
Kathryn: …with shitloads of attitude and ideas pouring out of our eyes.
Josh: Now…imagine four cities…
Sally: Four inspiring cities…
Kathryn: Four fantastic cities…
Adam: The Pool of Life!
Josh: Steel City!
Sally: Cottonopolis!
Kathryn:The Toon!
Sally: Fantastic cause each one’s unique…
Adam: …and they’re flowing through our veins, pumping through our hearts…
Josh: I love flying off the train, then straight into The Howard for a cheeky
ale…
Adam:
A pint in a plastic cup from The Cambridge and sitting in the sun in
Abercrombie Square…the purple and green and maroon and blue wheelie
bins…
Kathryn:
Dog walking at Tynemouth beach, the velvet palette of blues and
oranges, purples and azure…
Sally:
Women in shops calling you ‘luv’ and feeling like you’re getting a hug
from a complete stranger…
Adam:
Walking down a street and hearing 20 different languages…
Kathryn:
Plodgin’ through the clarts on the Town Moor when the Hoppins are
on…
Josh:
HENDERSONS RELISH! Same recipe and location for over 100 years!
Adam:
Smithdown Independents: like Dafna’s Cheesecake Factory and The
Horse’s Head D.I.Y – where you can buy a single nail if you want and they’d
still wrap it in brown paper for you…
Sally:
The Temple of Convenience – an underground bog, reinvented as a
shrine to beer…
Kathryn:
The Tyneside Cinema…where you miss a little bit of the dialogue
every time a Metro train rumbles underneath your feet….
Adam: The Magical 82 bus…
Josh: ‘Kelham Island’…’Surprise View’…
Adam: ‘The Holy Land’…’Port Sunlight’…
Kathryn: ‘Love Lane’…’Strawberry Place’…
Sally: ‘Brazennose Street’…’Enginefold Lane’…
Kathryn: Standing anywhere…at the Quayside or the Docks…
Sally: …the Cathedrals or the fields…
Adam: …and you see tourists and visitors going ‘ooh’ and ‘aah’…
Josh: …and you think “Yes. I live here. I live in this magnificent place”.
